Step-by-Step: The Home Energy Assessment Process in Ireland

Improving energy efficiency can feel overwhelming, especially with so much conflicting advice available. This guide explains how the Home Energy Assessment process works in Ireland and how Churchfield Home Services carries it out step by step, giving you clear, practical insight into your home’s performance before any decisions are made.

Step 1: Booking your Home Energy Assessment

The process starts when you book your Home Energy Assessment, either online or by phone. Many homeowners prefer booking online because it is quick and allows you to choose a time that suits your schedule, but speaking to our team is always an option if you would rather talk things through.

At this stage, we gather a small amount of information about your home — such as the  house type and location — so the assessment can be priced accurately and scheduled correctly. The pricing is based on your house type, not where you live, and the same assessment process applies whether your home is in Dublin, Mayo, Galway, Sligo, Roscommon, Kildare, Meath or Wicklow.

Once booked everything is arranged for you. There is nothing you need to prepare or research in advance.

Step 2: The in-home assessment

On the day of your assessment, a qualified assessor visits your home to carry out a detailed survey. This is not a quick walk-through. Time is taken to properly understand how your home is built, how it is heated, and how it is used.

The assessor looks at insulation levels in the attic, walls and floors, reviews the heating system and controls, checks ventilation and airflow, and records construction details that affect heat loss. Just as importantly, they take time to listen. Cold rooms, uneven heating or high bills all provide useful context, because how you experience your home matters.

This on-site visit forms the foundation of everything that follows.

Step 3: Your BER and performance analysis

After the survey, the information collected is used to complete your Building Energy Rating (BER). The BER gives an official snapshot of how energy-efficient your home is today, rated from G to A1.

At Churchfield, the BER is treated as a starting point, not the end result. We focus on understanding why your home performs the way it does and what practical improvements could change that.

This approach helps avoid generic advice and ensures recommendations are grounded in your specific home, not assumptions.

Step 4: A clear, tailored Home Energy Assessment report

Once the assessment is complete, you receive a clear, easy-to-understand Home Energy Assessment report. This explains how your home performs today and outlines a tailored upgrade pathway designed specifically for your property.

Rather than pushing individual measures, the report shows how different upgrades work together. It helps you understand what changes would have the biggest impact on comfort, efficiency and long-term performance, and in what order they should be considered.

Where relevant, the report also outlines which SEAI grants may apply. These are explained carefully and correctly, without over-promising or pressure to proceed.

Step 5: Guidance, not obligation

One of the most important parts of the Home Energy Assessment process is what doesn’t happen. There is no requirement to move forward with upgrades.

Many homeowners simply want clarity — to understand their options, plan for the future, or make informed decisions over time. Others choose to proceed straight away. Both approaches are valid.

As a Registered SEAI One Stop Shop, Churchfield Home Services is positioned to support you if you do decide to upgrade, managing everything from grant applications to installation. But the decision is always yours, and it always starts with understanding.

What happens next?

If you are considering comfort, running costs or the long-term performance of your home, a Home Energy Assessment is the natural first step.

You can book your assessment online or by phone. A qualified assessor will visit your home, complete the survey and BER, and prepare a clear, practical report. Once you receive it, you can review the findings in your own time and decide what — if anything — you want to do next. There is no obligation to proceed beyond the assessment.

Churchfield Home Services carries out Home Energy Assessments across Dublin, Mayo, Galway, Sligo, Roscommon, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow. As a Registered SEAI One Stop Shop, we provide calm, clear guidance from assessment through to upgrade, supporting you at every stage if you choose to move forward.
