How SEAI Solar PV Grants Work in Ireland

What Is the SEAI Solar PV Grant?
Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) provides financial support to homeowners installing Solar PV systems to generate renewable electricity at home.
The grant is designed to:
- Reduce upfront installation costs
- Encourage renewable electricity generation
- Support Ireland’s Climate Action targets
Solar PV is classed as an Individual Energy Upgrade (IEU), meaning it does
not require a full One Stop Shop upgrade plan to qualify.
How Much Is the Solar PV Grant?
The SEAI Solar PV grant is calculated based on system size (kWp).
Currently:
- €900 per kWp for the first 2kWp
- €300 per additional kWp (up to a capped system size)
- Maximum grant typically up to €2,100
Grant amounts are set by SEAI and can change, so it is important to confirm eligibility before proceeding.
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for a Solar PV grant in Ireland:
- Your home must have been built and occupied before 2021
- You must use an SEAI-registered contractor
- The system must meet SEAI technical standards
- You must receive grant approval before installation begins

Unlike One Stop Shop upgrades where grants are deducted upfront, Solar PV grants under the Individual Energy Upgrade route are typically:
- Paid to you after installation
- Claimed once works are completed and documentation is submitted
- Processed directly by SEAI
Your installer provides the required paperwork, and you submit the final grant claim.
Processing timelines can vary depending on SEAI workload.
Does Solar PV Work in Ireland?
Ireland’s daylight levels are sufficient for Solar PV to generate meaningful electricity savings throughout the year.
While output is higher in summer months, systems generate electricity even on bright cloudy days.
A properly designed system considers:
- Roof orientation
- Shading
- Electricity usage patterns
- Future battery compatibility
A professional assessment ensures realistic performance expectations.
Can Solar PV Be Combined With Other Grants?
Yes.
Solar PV can be installed:
- As a standalone Individual Energy Upgrade
- As part of a larger One Stop Shop home energy upgrade
If completing multiple upgrades, it may make sense to complete a Home Energy Assessment first to plan the works properly.
