If you're still heating your home with oil, gas or solid fuel, there's never been a better time to switch. A new €2,000 SEAI grant rewards you for scrapping your old heating system and moving to a heat pump. Here's how it works and what it means for your home.

Key takeaways

  • €2,000 extra when you replace oil, gas, electric storage or solid fuel heating with a heat pump.
  • Up to €14,500 in total towards a heat pump system for a house.
  • Live now. If your heat pump application is already in progress, the €2,000 is added automatically.
  • Homes built and occupied before 2021 can apply.

What is the boiler scrappage grant?

It's a new €2,000 payment from SEAI, announced on 29 September 2026. You get it when you remove a fossil fuel heating system and replace it with a heat pump. It sits on top of the existing heat pump grant, so it doesn't replace any support you already qualify for.

Around 700,000 Irish homes still rely on heating oil. The aim is simple: make it cheaper for those homes to move to cleaner, steadier heat and stop paying for every delivery.

Who qualifies?

You can claim the scrappage grant if:

  • Your home was built and occupied before 2021
  • You're removing an oil or gas boiler, an electric storage heating system or a solid fuel system
  • You're installing a heat pump through SEAI's heat pump grant

Homes with no central heating that are getting a heat pump also qualify. Owner-occupiers and landlords can both apply.

How much can you get?

For a detached, semi-detached or terraced house, SEAI support for a heat pump now adds up to €14,500:

Heat pump system

Up to €10,500

Radiators or underfloor

Up to €2,000

Boiler scrappage

€2,000

Apartments can get up to €11,500. A separate €200 grant covers the technical assessment where one is needed. Grants are only paid on approved works by an SEAI-registered installer.

Already applied for a heat pump?

Good news. If your heat pump application is already in progress and you're replacing a qualifying system, SEAI will add the €2,000 automatically. You don't need to do anything or reapply.

Year-round comfort with a heat pump

A boiler works in bursts. It fires up, blasts heat, then cuts out, and the house cools down again. A heat pump works differently. It runs gently and steadily in the background, keeping every room at an even, comfortable temperature.

Here's what that means day to day:

  • Even warmth through winter. No cold mornings waiting for the heating to kick in, and no chilly back rooms.
  • Hot water all year round. A heat pump heats your water as well as your home, summer and winter.
  • No more oil deliveries. No tank to fill, no running out on a cold night, no price shocks when oil spikes.
  • Lower running costs. A heat pump produces several units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses. Pair it with solar panels and you can run it on power you make yourself.
  • Cleaner air at home. No burning fuel inside or beside the house, and no fumes.

SEAI estimates that a whole home upgrade, including insulation and a heat pump, can save a household up to €1,120 a year.

Get your home ready first

A heat pump runs at lower temperatures than a boiler, so it works best in a home that holds its heat. That's why SEAI asks for a heat loss check on most homes built before 2007.

If your home needs insulation first, that's not a setback. It's the step that makes your heat pump efficient and your bills lower. Through our SEAI One Stop Shop, we plan the insulation, ventilation and heat pump together, size the system properly and handle every grant for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the grant to replace my old boiler with a new oil or gas boiler?

No. The scrappage grant only applies when you switch to a heat pump. SEAI does not fund like-for-like fossil fuel boilers.

Do I need to apply separately for the €2,000?

No. It's part of the SEAI heat pump grant. If your application is already in progress, it's added automatically.

Does it cover electric storage heaters and solid fuel?

Yes. SEAI includes oil and gas boilers, electric storage heating and solid fuel systems. Homes with no central heating that are installing a heat pump also qualify.

Will a heat pump work in an older home?

Yes, once the home is insulated well enough. A Home Energy Assessment will show where your home loses heat and what to do before installing.
